To close a productive 2018, CV employs the expertise of up-and-coming hardware aficionados McLean & Mai, who donate three entrancing original compositions. The Sydney-based duo exhibit an educated understanding of ever-evolving rhythmic patterns, while simultaneously presenting a collection of haunting and hollow sounds. The title track “Hours Melt Into Days” casts a web of synthesised elements, vibrating on top of a swooping percussive pattern, pushing listeners ever deeper down the sonic rabbit hole. “Voices” presents a slew of melancholy whispers layered atop a superb, bouncy cadence, and a kick to be felt from head to toe. To round off their originals, “Lower Control” illustrates progression at its finest. While adopting a marvellous collection of stabs and weaving rides, the track pushes ever forward, unrelenting as its phased and ever-contorting pulses provide audiences with a work that is impossible to pin down.

In expanding on the originals, Stalks and ADMINISTRATOR deliver their own interpretations, capitalising on the unique sounds put forward by McLean & Mai. In a rework of “Hours Melt Into Days,” Stalks breaks conventions and time signatures, piecing together a dizzying break-beat canter of drum echoes, holy pads, and vocal chants. ADMINISTRATOR, on the other hand, steps “Voices” up several notches. Working shakers aggressively pound on top of an irresistible automation of vocals and emotions, culminating in a final breakdown that is sure to whisk a crowd into a frenzy.
